custom exhaust: borla xr-1 enhanced

I've been looking all over websites and threads for hours for ideas and it's getting late and i'm still not sure what i want to do. i would love to have the sound of the borla xr-1. if i could i would get a borla exhaust but they don't make them for rx-7's. what i was thinking was to get the rb dp and y-pipe because they are 80mm-60mm split like i want and put the 16" borla xr-1 as the midpipe. then i would need a couple mufflers that were polished stainless steel with a 60mm inlet and about a 120mm(3.5") outlet that wouldn't really make any difference because i wouldn't need them for sound if i had the xr-1 (so i've read), just looks. i don't want straight pipe after the y-pipe. i guess my questions are:

1. where could i find decent quality mufflers with those specs?
2. how do you think that idea would work out?

i have a 91 t2 with a bnr stage 2 turbo upgrade

thanks

The XR-1 works great as a mid-muffler/pre-silencer. A friend of mine bought the Corksport full S4 TII exhaust system. It was way too loud, the Borla brought the note down to perfect. His was also the single muffler setup..

yeah, i've read a lot of stories just like yours where the xr-1 helped out with some of the worst exhaust. my exhaust is shitty but doesn't sound horrible. i just want to replace it because i have the money and i need something that's going to be more reliable and last. i also want the original dual exhaust setup.

performance wise the thunder fabrication 3 inch DP/MP 1 piece is the best on the market. It is loud in the higher rpms. I have one on my vert turbo and I ended up welding a borla xr1 oval in as a mid pipe and it completely toned down the car at idle up to 2k. Above 3k it still scares kids but has a deeper tone. Takes the sound of a italian sports car over a japanese one.

Go on Yahoo and search?

I'll do it real quick, see how long it takes:
http://store.yahoo.com/hopup1/bospreexcasy3.html (First hit, look around there and find the best prices).

And honestly I don't know where you can find the Thunder Fabrication store. But there is always a CS midtipe and downpipe @ http://www.corksport.com

There are no cat-back exhaust differences between series 4 and 5 cars.

i apologize for asking simple questions, but i was still a little frustrated from spending 6 hours searching for an exhaust that i like. anyway, does anyone know what size the piping and tips are and if it's dual(kinda misleading in that link up there)? it doesn't say where i searched or on their website and i can't find it.

i just really want the borla sound... i ordered my exhaust:
thunder fabrications dp
borla xr-1 (resonator)
racing beat y-pipe
2 Matrix sport mufflers from summit racing

that's 3" dp to 3" borla to 2.5" y'pipe to 2.5" muffler inlet to 3.5" muffler outlet

what do you think?

what's a glass-wrap perforated tube?

You might be burning out those mufflers in notime.

what exactly does that mean? i don't want to pay $80/each on brand new mufflers and destroy them. i just wanted mufflers that i liked. how do you prevent that?

The heat of a rotary engine's exhaust tends to eat up glass based muffler material. It isnt usually as pronounced if the mufflers are all the way in the rear, but moreso when you have them in the midpipe. It may take a while, but they will eventually burn out. I would look toward something with stainless steel material, similar to your Borla XR-1.

the mufflers are polished stainless steel it's just that they said that it's got a glass-wrap perforated tube. what would happen when they burnt out? would it just not sound as good? wouldn't the xr-1 possibly make it sound decent if that DID happen?

They have a fiberglass packing that will melt. The fiberglass is what actually does the sound deadening.
