Custom Exhaust

My '87 Turbo II needs a new exhaust.
The mufflers are shot, the tips are gone, and there are some leaks.

There's a local exhaust shop in town that I have used before for my other car that does nice work at an acceptable price.

Should I just take my car to them and have a custom exhaust system put on the car, or is it advantageous to buy a kit out of the box and attempt to install it in the drive-way?

i think in the long run, it would be more advantageous to buy a performance set up. the reason that i say this is because of the heat generated by the rotary. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the exhaust shop job, but i dont think it would last as long. Hell, there was even a guy that had a borla muffler as a pre-silencer and it exploded after a couple years. my .02

Id say it depends on how much money you want to spend and how long you want it to last. If you want to dump money into the exhaust then by all means by an aftermarket exhaust system. But if you are like me and just want to get rid of the annoying 3.5" exhaust and dont really care about the long run...build your own..(or go to a shop)

I was thinking a high flow cat, 3" pipe, then 2.5" from the Y into a pair of Super Turbo Mufflers from Dynomax of Magnaflow..

I want to keep it under $400 and still pick up performance, sound, while passing the New York state inspection.

the issue i've always found is with mufflers. Mostly "replacement" mufflers that shops will try to use or you can buy from say autozone tend to blow out. I wish i had a picture of the mufflers on my friend convertible. They where an OEM replica muffler, and they are only crimped together. Both literally blew out. We ended up using hammers and reshaping the metal to be be close enough to weld them back together, which sucked.

If the car is a turbo, a mostly straight pipe isn't really too loud to me but that is subjectional. You can get some good used exhaust systems off other rx7 folks. The Racing Beat mufflers are good at keeping the engine decently quiet, but they do dampen the flow.

If you are going with dual's then you need to go at most 2" from the Y. If you dont do this then it will be too big and cause problems...

I am planning on going with a custom exhaust an my N/A also.

I was thinking of running a 2.75 from the cat and 2 inch y pipe. What do you guys think? I am new to the rotary and dont really know what size pipe would be the most bennifical.
