Crushed fuel tank conundrum
Crushed fuel tank conundrum
Sooooo.. Drove off a ditch tonight.. seriously it wasnt all my fault the road was sloped and i couldnt tell the difference between the driveway and ditch... long story short i hit a drainage pipe on landing.
only thing i can see that is damaged beside breaking a hole in my exhaust is the fuel tank.
the car turns over and then sputters to almost a start, like its not getting enough of... fuel.
my guess is that, since its dented up on the left side of the tank it broke something on the fuel pump which is approximately above the dent? is there like a metal tube or anything on the pump that may have been damaged that goes to the bottom of the tank?

itll buff out

Pull up the rear carpet. There is a panel towards the driver's side with wires running to it. Remove the screws on that panel and the screws on the panel beneath it to get access to the fuel pump and fuel gauge sender assembly. Inspect it for any damage. I don't think replacing the gas tank would be that hard either, but somebody else can chime in on that.
Yeow, sorry to hear about the accident...
I don't think the pick-up is in that corner.
If anything it's smack dab in the middle or slightly on the other side.
You can peek into the tank by removing the carpet / sound deadener pad and then removing the fuel tank cover / bracket.

yeah the damage in the front is in the passengers side, the damage to the rear/fuel tank is to the driver side. the tank is damaged right to the left of that brace/bracket that supports the tank up (as shown).
im busting out the haynes, depressurizing the fuel system, and taking out the pump.. if its damaged anyone know how much they cost?
i should only bother buying a walbro right?

Negative.
The Walboro would be overkill and need further modifications to not drown your engine (high fuel pressure). Buy a replacement S4 NA pump\tank combo and be safe in knowing its more than capable of meeting your needs.

does anyone happen to know what this crap i pulled out of my fuel pump is, is it necessary, or do i need a new pump?
when the tank got crushed up these parts of the fuel pump got shoved up into the hose, possibly explaining the car not working (we will see).

well, the cracked bit of the nipple was probably leaking fuel out around the hose and not pressurizing the fuel system, giving you a little bit of flow but not nearly enough to run off of. Im not familiar with the two smaller pieces to the right, but they seem to be a rudimentary check-valve or something, although i dont know for sure. When i pulled my NA fuel pump to replace it (with a warlboro, but b/c i was going turbo), i didnt see them.
the connection with the nipple was fine actually, i tested the whole bit and everything seems to be working in that department.
i was thinking and my guess to those little pieces that were inside the nipple are an anti-siphon valve or whatever you could call it. a one way valve? because as we all know the fuel system stays pressurized when we shut off the car.. i was thinking and will find out when i start my car (killed the battery), those pieces are what keeps the system pressurized?
so if the system works but depressurizes every time i shut it off, it will at least buy me time to go get a new pump.
thank you.
