Crossthreaded SPARK PLUG!FUdge

alright just picked up this turbo ii yesterday and was pulling the emissions today and noticed that the trailing plug on the rear iron was halfway out. i checked it out and it backed out fine but when i tried to re thread it in it would still only go about half way in. it looks like it is going in strait but it still has about a half inch it needs to thread in. what do i do?

Chase the threads with a tap.
And hold tight to your bus pass.

Take it to a shop to "Get the spark plugs changed." Then when "THEY cross thread the spark plug" they have to fix it for free and give a free spark plug change.

Seriously though, Be EXTREMELY careful when you tap that thing, check, recheck, and triple check the size, make sure you have plenty of room to work, and if you feel the tap binding up, for the love of God stop! Recheck yourself to make sure you're not crooked, and try again.

man i just did my spark plugs and before i put them in i tightened them with my fingers thinking wouldn't that suck if i messed the threads up?!?!?!? sorry man i know your in a jam and just remember when your in a crunch, the last thing you should do is crunch the time. haist dose in fact make waist and when its your car we could all be a lil more careful but often times its the lil things we don't stop and think about that makes the biggest difference. just this weekend i did the o-ring fix on my car. btw its looking like it worked! anyhow i had to take my girl home at 930 so she could babysit her sises kid while she got taken to work. it took us till 900 to get the last of the flushing done and then we cleaned up and i put the stuff in the radiator and we got in and the car wouldn't start. can you imagine the whirl wind of thought and emotion going through my head as i looked back on a day of unconventional Jerry rigging i did on my motor. so freaking out i stepped back the took a breath and though don't rush this just take all the time you need. of course i had 30 min. so we tried for ten min till the lights started to dim and final i remembered something about these engines prone to flooding when you start and stop them with out driving. i looked under the hood found the egi fuse crossed my fingers and preyed that a large group of people on this forum wasn't full of **** gave it a few cranks plugged the fuse in and it started right up! thank you rx7 forum btw. so thanks to my cool headedness i was able to devise a remedy before 930 just goes to show you man.

Taping is going to create lots of little pieces of metal sitting in the threads. You need to be as careful as possible, and then stick a vacuum on the plug hole to be sure none of that crap falls into the housing. The last thing you want is a chunk of metal gouging the housing and denting your apex seals.

there is a tool designed specifically for this, you insert it in down to the good threads, then tighten a bolt on the end to expand the end of the tap, and then you turn the tap out. its called a "spark plug thread chaser" or something like that. they are a life saver. also put some grease on the tap to collect all the metal shavings.

Put grease on the tap to help keep the shavings from entering the chamber.

though it probobly exists going into a shop and asing for a spark plug tap chaser sounds similar to going to autozone asn asking for headlight fluid.

the only problem i can think of is when you go to tap, the hole is probably crooked. you said that the spark plug does thread in, so that means those threads could be good but crooked. now you are going to start tapping but possibly following a crooked path, it might look straight from above but is it straight from all angles? just be careful.
worse comes to worse the housing might still be ok but needs to be repaired disassembled.

Here is what im talking about, something like these. I cant remember what size you would need, but a search would tell you that, or the parts store you buy them at might be able to tell you that.

I had a similar problem and just blasted things out with WD-40. The threads didn't need cutting, they were just dirty and disgusting from having the spark plug not in all the way and getting combustion products on them.

My trailing plug on my front rotor had some dirty threads, cleaned it out a little bit and worked like a champ.
