Cracked Center Iron

Hey guys, ive been goin through an engine tear down and cleaning for the winter to rebuild my 88 T2.

while i was cleanin i found on my center iron a crack on one of the lower legs leading into the outer coolant seal grove. i took a few pictures that show the extent of the crack. it seems to only be on the surface and u can see it doesnt go through in one of the photos.

http://picasaweb.google.com/boomshikie/CenterIronCrack

question, does this seem reusable? or should i look for a new iron? thanks in advance for all the help.

Huh, that's interesting. How deep is it?

It's probably fine as it looks like it's been around for a while, but I'd get another iron. They're cheap.

S4 NA center side housing has EGR ports in the primary runner so stay away from that one. Otherwise the other irons '86-91 irons can all be ported to be identical.

S5 has a later opening smaller primary port unported though, but who would rebuild a rotary without porting it :P

That is unusual, I have never seen that before. I think it would be fine to run, but if budget allows you might pick up another used one for 100 bucks or so.
