coupes or convertibles

Im wondering what the ratio of coupes to convertibles sold in the USA was, for the second gen cars.

I look on autotrader.com often and see that its about 90-95% convertibles for sale and only a small number of coupes, which surprises me.

Does anyone know the ratio, or amount of each sold in comparison to each other?

yeah most rx-7 are coupes..

it is odd that people are tring to get rid of convertables?

you have base ,gxl ,turbo II, gtu, models for coupes
and only 1 model of convertable. so there has to be more of hte other models.

thanks for the replies, its always cool to get different views etc.

Ok, this lines up with my original thoughts also, that there cant be more convertibles than coupes, yet it is an oddity that on major car sites convertibles outnumber coupes so drastically.

I also prefer coupes. I have seen a few nice convertibles. I do believe that convertibles are probaly, for the most part, better taken care of because they are driven less, AND modified less. I havent seen many modified convertibles.. have you ??? I wouldnt pay 18,000 thats for sure.

also, it would depend on the climate, Im in nebraska, so there arent many convertibles of any model, I imagine out west or in florida they abound.

One of my rx books says that road and track, or car and driver did tests in the late 80;s rx-7's and found convertibles to be rather slow, in fact, recording 0-60 times of over 10 seconds .. on the other hand it says they were built better in some areas with finer tolerances, like in the windshield areas, etc.
To each is own, I guess.

Ok those are some people that have had the verts since new.... I have had 2 coupes, and now I have a vert.... Its alot harder to find a ragged out vert than it is to find coupes in awefull condition... I know I fuked up my vert after I bought it, but thats all about to change... anyways there are alot more coupes out there than verts. I dunno why the reason is that there are more verts being sold, I gues the people that are selling them either moved on up or see no benefit in keeping an almost 20 year old car which requires a shitload of maintenance.

yea the verts are very slow stock, and if you get them auto then thats even worse... but let me tell you, its like driving a turboII w/o boost (im talking about ride quality not speed wise) and feels even better than a TII with boost... very well built car, not to mention that the top doubles as a roll cage. my fat *** could stand on the top and it wont even budge..
and im 6'0" 250 lbs

my thoughts behidn the verts being up for sale. are that alot of the owners were probably the first. they are an older group who either wanted the latest "mo better stuff".. oor wanted a buick .... the kids dont put alot of rx7s on the net for sale. and i would think them to be in pretty good shape becuase the same group of people are probably like my mom... drives her s2000 when its nice out and its ok to break traction.. the buick when its poopy weather. makes for a low mileage vehicle.. crusties(30+) [flame me] dont mod their sevens they think they are just fine.... its probably an ok car..

You'll probably see a higher percentage of verts for sale online than made because they are looking for top dollar. At the bottom of this post are the sales stats.

0-60 times are not what makes a sports car, it's handling and braking that control speed.

The vert was decently quick in its day and can keep up with most cars in the turns, you cannot compare 15 year old cars to todays technology. A Honda or Toyota minivan can do 0-60 in 7.5 seconds now.

year verts total RX-7s
1986 0 56,243
1987 0 38,345
1988 7,002 27,814
1989 4,032 16,249
1990 3,535 9,743
1991 3,151 6,986
totals 17,720 155,380

yeah the reason you see more verts in the auto trader is that they were worth more money so they were fixed instead of sent to the bone yard. Put 2k into fixing a vert and you have a cool sports car with the top down. Put 2k into any other NA and you are just waisting your money because you can buy Na's for 2k all day long. Verts in any sports cars hold their value more due to the "cool factor".

Amen, can't stand the vert bashing that goes on here. Can't beat it on a sunny day on a nice back road.

If you look on Ebay typically about 50 RX-7's for sale (all gen's) of which about 5 are verts.

I have never seen any vret bashing... only thing that I heard people say is that its slow... which is true, since over here they werent meant to be race cars, but that can easily change... a quick swap and you can quickly apreciate the true sports car handling that the car delivers...

My first 7 was a vert, sure it was a pimp ride, a sound system and straight body and a nice glossy black paint, and when the top is down its all over and the girls just come crawling..haha jp, but yeah my vert was SLOW though, though I loved drivin it and being seen in it, it was too slow for my taste. So, i sold her and got me a coupe, the body is not that straight ,no leaks(my vert had leaks all over)lower mileage(my vert being close to 170k) and its much faster.=). but with all that being said, i say COUPE over VERT.

to each their own. If I was to go hard top for lightweight I would get a 3rd gen. I got the vert to have a 400rwhp top down sleeper. Plus with a body kit and some wheels most people don't even know what type of car it is.

I love my vert, but want it to be slower. That's why it's getting a T2 swap in March/April. The poor old tired engine just isn't cutting it any more.

My second 7 was a vert. I wish I still had it. It was decently quick when I was done with the bolt on mods (mid 15 sec 1/4). I traded it for BOOST! I don't regret the trade, but I still want another vert. Boost+vert= perfect FC
