Finishing up assembling my engine and found that I had two counterwieghts. I think one was from the rotors that were in there before and the other from the "new" rotors that are in there. They look like they're weighted differently but they were both supposed to be for s5. I honestly think the rotors and counterweight that were in there before were not what I was told they were (s5).

Can you visually tell the difference between s5 and s4 counterweights? If not what are the weights of them and suggestions as to where I could take them to get weighed would be nice.

aah good idea thanks. Looked like the one that possible came with the s5 rotors had an extra hole in the bottom but I still want to be sure and couldn't find the weights when searching the board

i don't recall S4 counterweights having any drilling in them, the drilled one is likely for the S5 rotors, keep in mind that you will also need the S5 flywheel to balance the front counterweight and rotors.

I'm pretty sure one has two holes in the bottom and the other had three...though I could be smoking something. If they're both s5 I suppose it doesn't matter which one I use?

out of curiosity with this i grabbed one of my S4 counterweights off the shelf and it has 1 hole drilled into it about half an inch deep but the amount of holes drilled could be reliant on the machinist making the counterweight i guess..


and nope, it doesn't matter which you use if they are both S5 counterweights but if you have an S4 and S5 and choose the wrong one you will have an engine vibration result.

here's the numbers I got from floppyhat69 and also myself

From what I gather the number of holes means nothing because some s4 counterweights have one hole some have two and some s5 counterweights have one, two, or three holes

floppyhats numbers
s5 2lbs 10.1oz
s4 2lbs 12.5oz

my numbers on the two s5 counterweights I have
2.64lbs or 2 & 10.08oz
2.63lbs or 2 & 10.24oz

So the numbers will vary from s5 to s5 but from these numbers they should obviously be right around 2lbs 10oz and your s4 around 2 & 12oz

Can you tell me, on the front side of the CW does the casting ramp up to the shaft bore or is it squared off?.

I have 2 here that should both be S5 (both came from engines with S5 rotors, well 1 had a s6 rotor) although they appeared different as i have described.

Anyway brought em to work & weighed @ 1.238kg (squared off) & 1.188kg (ramped).

Ive just noticed another difference, the thrust surface is larger on the heavier CW (60.18mm OD vs 52.05mm)

So i guess the question now is what engine has a larger say 60mm OD thrust bearing?
