you have to have a cap with a spring pressure release on whichever cap assembly has the overflow line attached to it. the thermostat housing cap does not require a spring pressure release UNLESS that is where your coolant overflow hose is sourced.

a cap with just a rubber seal and no spring release is used for the coolant fill without overflow tube.
