cooing unit part of a/c

I already removed all the engine bay a/c system components. However, there is the cooling unit part left under the pass side dash. Can this unit be removed as well? Will the removal of the unit cause the heating system not to work, because it provides a path for the air? (Is this a stupid question?)

Anyways, just want the info before I rip half my dash off?

Yes. Yes it will cause the heater not to work unless you
1. fab up a duct from the heater to the blower
2. Remove the exhanger from the housing, seal all the holes, and reinstall the housing, so air from the blower can get to the heater.
