Question Converting an Auto to a 5 speed

I have the opportunity to buy another '91 n/a FC in perfect shape with only 43k miles on it and in beautiful shape very cheap. However it is an automatic. My intention is to convert this girl into a 5 speed. Is it possible to do this? Any ideas on cost involved? Has anybody done this?

Your comments please...

I had this done by a guy who works for mazda but does jobs on the side. It cost 850 dollars parts and labor. the parts were used except he put a new clutch in. havent had any problems with it had the work done back in september. besides getting turbo i think it is the best performance mod you can do to the automatic.

Heres what you need:

flywheel for your year of motor(89-91 in this case)
clutch parts
slave cylinder/master cylinder/lines(any 5sp FC, turbo or non)
pedal set(brake and clutch)(any 5sp FC)
shifter adn boot, and shift bushings(any 5sp FC, though teh 89+ ar nicer)
5sp trans, any 86-91 NA
5sp starter, any 86-91 NA
5sp driveshaft, any 86-91 NA

some 1/8"-1/4" thick metal strips/bars to extend the transmission mount crossmember with. Youll see wha I mean if you do it yourself, but the holes in the chassis will be about a foot away fromt eh mounting holes on the crossmember. They made the chassis different on the automatic cars. You just bolt these stri[ps onto the car, and then bolt the crossmember to these sstrips.

Youll have to find a way around the wiring for the automatic's park/neutral safety ****. The easiest thing to do is to find the start wire at the ignition switch, cut it, and run your own wire directly to the starter solenoid. Just dont start it with the car in gear! You could run this wire through the stock clutch switch on the pedal assembly, and it would require the clutch to be depressed, like stock.

With good tools and work space, and all the parts on hand, it is a one day job. Aside from the mounts being made, there is no fabrication or cutting, just bolt in.,

Feel free to email me with any further questions.
