Convertible vs Coupe: Window regulator & cable interchangeability?
So, I just obtained an 89 vert, but it suffers from the common window regulator failure. Mine had the plastic cable guide's broken, as well as chewed up cable.
My question is, can I use the motor & cables from a power window S4 coupe, while using the metal window sliding track & "train" from the vert, & basically hybridize the 2 to make 1 working unit?
Thanks!

I've replaced and rebuilt a couple of these. Rebuilding vert regulators is no fun. What I've found while working on my father and my's 4 verts over the years is that if you keep the cables greased well it goes a long long ways towards the life of the regulator.
What I found is that the slide Jack is refering to snaps under strain. What I've seen happen is the window gets slow and is working longer/harder to go up. That slowing of the window has been the precursor to every regulator I've had to replace. I've found that the window gets slow because it needs some grease on the cable. The regulator I'm using now was slow, I took the door panel off, greased the cable really good and have had no issues since.
Granted that piece is going to break eventually, but I've gotten a lot of life out of mine doing this.

Are you needing a drivers or passenger side? I might be able to get you a replacement.

Here is a picture of the FC3S MANUAL window regulator. The vert regulator is arranged very similar to this. There is a motor instead of a crank and instead of a pulley, the engineers installed a dual grooved nylon slide.
Under normal use the grease eventually scrapes off the cable, the cable wears/CUTS into the slide eventually causing it to break off under the tension of moving the window.
For some unknown reason, it is most always the passenger side that breaks first. You can find lots of driver side regulators in good shape, but very few of the passenger side. I had to rebuild my old one. There is an old tutorial that is kinda sketchy. I had to do it twice before I got it right.
When I rebuilt my vert regulators, I installed a pulley just as shown in the picture. The windows work smooth and fast. I also did the relay modification to eliminate switch burn-out.
Do it right, do it once.
jack- where did you get the pulley?
I think I remember my pass window getting slow, oddly enough I have swapped the drivers side out already.
I have a manual door in my storage of parts I could grab that pulley from

I'm more interested in where he got the dog. Cute little guy.
Question of the day:
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
Why did Mazda engineers NOT use a pulley on the Vert regulators? Smaller glass than a coup, so lighter and thus less strain on the pulley. Certainly would put less strain on the motor than a slide.
Next manual window 2nd Gen I see in a pic a part, I'm going to follow Rob's lead and pull the regulator to check this out as to the eye the regulator itself looks identical. Will the manual pulley directly mount directly into the slide unit's spot? Hmmmmmmmm.

Originally I intended to use a cast aluminum pulley that I was going to source a pulley block from a fitting from a company called Harken. They make parts for sailboats. Then I realized that the manual FC system was similar and scavenged a pair from the salvage yard. Better price.

. Oh well, search continues.
