Convertible top leak into trunk, need help
Convertible top leak into trunk, need help
I just picked up an RX7 convertible and the top leaks. I search and most of the leak posts are around the windows and targa. Mine leaks into the trunk. I have been investigating and the rear window is not leaking. It appears the the water is getting in along the back edge of the top where it meets the body, then running inside the car and into the trunk (I park on an uphill slope). It seems like it is either getting in around the bolts/holes along the back, or maybe weeping up from where the top meets the body. Has anyone else had a leak in this area and been able to fix it? Does anyone have any close up pictures of that flange/ bolt holes where the top mount that they could share so I can see if it is possible for the water to get in around the bolt holes.
Thanks
Thanks
did you check if your drain hoses are connected?
there is a lip around the bottom you would have to really direct water with a pressure gun to get it in past that

Thanks, for the reply, I saw that picture but it does not have enough clarity to tell what the holes/lip looks like. Is the lip a separate piece of metal or where 2 pieces join together? Could lip have a gap in it that lets water get in the trunk?
the lip is not separate
its pretty easy to take the fasteners out and pull it back and look, by now the forming bar is probably rusted and the 2 tenax fasteners closest to the doors will probably snap off on you as well so maybe just leave those in place for now

I would also suggest inspecting the drain tubes in the trunk to ensure they are properly fastened to the metal drain ends and that there are no leaks in the drain tubes themselves. Rodents chewed the drain tube on one of my RX-8's and I had to remove the headliner in order to replace the drain tube. Its common that the drain tubes clog up and cannot drain properly. I would suggest blowing them out with compressed air if you are able to.
Thanks for the replies, I pulled the back apart before the big rain last week. I checked the drain pockets and drain tubes and they are not leaking. I have not unbolted everything and lifted it up yet to look. I just got sealant and removed the bolts and added sealant to each hole to see if that fixes it. If not, I will have to unbolt it and lift it up.
I did find an Australian rotary forum that has a nice write up on the convertible top replacement and has lots of pictures.you have to register but it is worth it.

Just wanted to follow up from my previous post. I ended up removing all the bolts/screws that hold the back of top to the body and added some non-hardening strip caulk to the holes, then re-installed the fasteners. After 3 different rainy days, I have not had any leaks, so it appears to be fixed. I would not have thought that water could get in through the bolt holes, but that appears to be where the water was coming from. Wanted to let everyone know for future reference.
