Convertable Top/ Questions??

I bought a 1988 Convertable Rx-7, it will be my daily driver shortly. THe top needs replacing as it is badly torn. I found a top at a junkyard in good shape and I am going to buy it. My question is.. The Top on my car does not function with the switch, I can turn the switch and I can hear the motors running but the top does nothing, even when I have the parking brake up. I assume the motors are dead. THe car has 114k on the clock which is surprising that they would be dead. I can hear them working they just do nothing.

Question 2: How hard it the top to remove? Am I just going to unbolt it all and take it as one peice as it will not open without the battery which is gone. (on the car at the junkyard) I assume that is how you do it.. anyone know..?

THis car is going to get the s5 mouldings and bumpers off the car at the junkyard as the car will be repainted anyways... I know this post is random but I am new to the VERTS.....

I would try and manually fold the top down and then it should be pretty easy to unbolt. I would suspect (as I have never done this-I have only worked on them open) that the top would be a nightmare to try and remove closed.

Ice, I made that mistake once. I ended up unbolting the whole body from the frame to get the top off. What a nightmare. And then the shop wouldn't fix the top, cause they said the whole thing was to big to fit into their shop. Learned the hard way.

Secondly, if you can hear the motors running, how can they be dead? Put that kid in avatar in charge, and things will go smoothly from there.

Check out the FAQ, and the sticky stuff at the top, and your questions will be answered. Sorry for being a smart ***, but you will learn.

If you can't REALLY find answer after searching, post back, and we'll take care of it.

PEACE THE DOG

I did it about a month ago, it's not hard. Unbolt the linkage for the top motors, let the top down, remove the targa piece, unbolt the exterior bolts, unbolt the inner bolts (four of these, I believe), pull the drain hoses out of the floor, unbolt the three bolts on either "b" colloum support, and lift the top right off.

Download the Service Manual and go through the troubleshooting steps. It's probably a loose cable or similar.

AA Best Co. sells just the skin for $265. It does require cutting out the glass hole.
