Confused about RX-7 motor mounts

Well I was pulling the motor and trans out of my 88 NA FC.

So I disconnected everyting minus the motor mounts, and then took the weight off the motor mounts by pulling the motor up with the engine hoist, and everything just came up! I never touched the motor mounts at all!!

Did I tear on of the motor mounts? Should I replace the mounts when I put the new engine back in?

What did I do wrong?

Thanks alot!

-Charlie

Both were already broken. It's very common for the passenger mount to break, not so much the driver.

I think when I got my parts car, both engine mounts were broken. One was broken in my car years ago when I first got it.

I had a broken mount and didnt even know it. When you take it out itll look like a mushroom where the rubber has pulled away from the metal section.

damn it! What part is most likely broken? That part on the chassis, or on the motor?

The black part is what usually breaks, the round thing. You can get used ones cheap, new aluminum ones on ebay are cheap but some people say they are too harsh.

The center of the motor mount that actually does the supporting is made of a stiff rubber. Over time it will tear in half, thus a broken motor mount.
You can get much stiffer competition engine and tranny mounts (highly recommended) for a similar price to the stock ones at mazdatrix. They greatly stiffen the drivetrain but don't really add any NVH.
