compression test without uim?

i need to do a compression test to figure out if its even worth it to try to fix my 87 NA. the problem is that right now the uim and fuel rails are taken off. is it safe/accurate to do a compression test like this? i really dont want to put it back together because i know it will just have to come off again to replace fuel lines and maybe the PD.
also, what are the symptoms of a bad PD? when i took mine off, the screw was sitting in the bottom of the little plastic cap. i put it in but the car still didnt run right. im getting really frustrated trying to figure out what is wrong with this thing. im thinking about doing the banjo bolt mod, just because it is cheaper than a PD and it would assure me that the PD is not my problem. what do u guys think?

Sure.

+1 You can even compression test an engine without the intake and exhaust manifolds on.
