You can, but the rule of thumb that I stick to is this: try and test each chamber's compression when the engine is at operating temperature. This way, you'll get a more proper reading as all of the metals of the engine (and engine pieces) are nice and properly seated. If the engine's already out, that might be hard to do unless you fashion a test stand and let it sit and run.

why can't you just hook up the compression guage and crank the engine by the flywheel? i don't see why you need the starter to do it, unless it's a matter of strength.

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
You cant turn the engine by hand fast enough to get a reading. You can feel for pulses by hand form each plug hole and count to 6 alternating.
I use a tranny and starter and battery on the floor, and do it that way.
