That was the main part of the reason i mentioned it, the OEM apex seals, you don't know if they are 3 piece or 2 piece until you open it. If they are 2 piece, then you know its been rebuilt recently and can just order a gasket kit and put it back together
Just double check all the tolerances and make sure they are in spec too, this way, you KNOW what the engine is internally, not just guessing

if your gonna pull the engine to paint it, may as well go the extra step and fine out more about the engine with opening it up, that way, you only have to pull it once, not drop it back in, than possibly have to pull it back out
If it were me, I'd be cracking the keg open for my own piece of mind

Yes will do. I have a coolant leak somewhere anyway so doing the seals will knock one potential location off the list.
So regarding the apex seals, when RotaryEvolution mentioned 3 piece apex seals I assumed he meant they had broken.
I assume they came with different types from the factory then?
The plan is to avoid rebuilding (as in replacing all the parts, don't mind a strip and rebuild just for inspection) if at all possible, do the rest of the car and use it for around a year and decide if I'd like to turbo charge it, having done a turbo conversion before I know how long they can drag on so I'd rather just have that to focus on, not rebuilding the whole car!

ALL FC cars were originally built with 3 piece factory seals, if the engine has never been rebuilt. actually all 1986-2002 engines were originally built with the 3 piece seals. mazda eventually discontinued them and you can hardly even find them anymore.
the factory 3 piece seals are just that, 3 pieces. they are also prone to premature failure for an unnecessary sealing aspect.
generic picture, but this is the same design:
i've got a bag of a few hundred of them, i use them for rotor seal slot and coolant seal channel scrapers.

It's almost certain that I'll have the original 3 piece seals then. And if I end up changing the apex seals then I guess I might as well do the whole lot.
Looking around the UK this seems like a viable option
RX7 Engine Rebuild parts for EGI TII and REW 1986-2003 Internal Rebuild Kit Using Genuine Mazda Parts with Goopy Apex Seals
Well I'll worry about that further down the road.
I need to get the car into a state where I'd be happy to drive it first, the engine done after everything else is ready
