Compression Test

i have an 88' T2 and it has a couple problems (hot start problem, stahl when not on gas) and after a phone call to RX7 store and just driving the car i have been lead to and have reason to believe i could have compression loss. I called up every Mazda dealership within nearly 70 miles of where im at and only one of them has the stuff to do a compression test on my car, and at a price of 90.00 im looking for other options. What im wondering is that, if i use a "universal tester" purchased for just basic shop use if it will give me valid information. And if it will work will the numbers be any different than what i would be looking for if i took it to a dealership.

SEARCH!!! This has been covered more times than it needed to be. Short answer... YES, a universal tester will work.

Yes, the universal tester will work, but if it holds pressure, then you would have to unscrew the valve that way it wont hold the pressure. After that, you need to see three clear bounces (90-110psi is average on a rebuilt motor and is average.) In my book, if you are below 90, then a rebuild is your friend now, or it will be your enemy later.
