compatibility question
I need some technical help from one of you guru's. I was wondering if it's possible to swap engine and attached engne bay components from a 87 non turbo with a 89 non turbo GTU? Both 5 speeds. Any help would be appreciated. I just crashed my 87 last weekend but my engine and all components are still good and I looking to transplant into another vehicle. Please help if you can. Thanks, Gary

Yes, you can.... BUT it will take a lot of work
The '89 has a different setup. You'll need a new wiring harness as the VDI system and others will need to be operative. The REDLINE is higher too so the CPU may need to be replaced. The engine, pumps, alternator oil pan etc... should swap right in. Exhaust should line right up.
Dont ahve time to go too much into details as there are a LOT but if you have some specific ?'s i may be able to help

In therory he could use all of the 87 engine, harness, cats, and ECU in the 89.
But if he wanted to just use the short block, that would be a lot of work including things like the front cover
