Cold air out of console vents even when console not selected
So here's the deal...
If I select the console vents, put the heat to max and crank the fan, hot air blasts out of the console vents. Beauty.
But, driving on the highway, no matter what vents are selected, if the heat isn't maxxed I get cold air falling out of the center vents (which is damned uncomfortable on my right hand.) If I pick Recirculate, the cold air disappears, but whatever warm air I was getting from blow-through also disappears, so the car becomes cold after a short while. I didn't have this problem on my last RX-7. No unwanted cold air anywhere.
I make a round trip to Ottawa every six weeks (6 hours one way, usually at night) and this is pissing me off. The Haynes manual is zero help and I don't want to start gutting things behind the console without some guidance. Any suggestions on what to look for? I had the Logicon checked over a year ago for cold solder points (there were a few, and all were repaired.) Should I do it again? I suspect that there must be a gate somewhere in the ducting that isn't closing completely...

"Why don't you go stand over there? There's no point in me blowing both of us up..." Said to a friend while extracting the fuel pump from my parts car using a hammer and cold chisel.

Are you saying the heat no longer works when the recirc is on??
The 2 suspects would be the Logicon that controls the HVAC system is not sending the right signals, or your heater mode door is somehow not getting into the right postion, ie something jamming it.

No, just that recirc cuts off air flow from outside the car (as it should.) If I turn on the fan, I get heated air without the cold air from the console vents. I thought that this 411 would be helpful in tracing the prob.

I'm leaning towards the door/gate prob idea. But I don't know where to start or what to look for. The Haynes manual is great for changing oil or using the lighter, but totally useless for this.

My87 n/a does the same thing - with the heat selector at max you get hot air from the dash vents and as you lower the heat level the air from the vents gets colder until when you hit the blue level you are getting cool air - I think it supposed to work that way and I like it!
If you don't want cool air from the vents just select the 'foot' setting on the logicon. By the way, are you sure you don't have the outside vent slightly open? [sliding handle on dash at lower left]

My complaint is that I get a flow of cold air from the console vents no matter what vents I choose. The only way to cut it off is to hit Recirc or crank up the heat all the way.

Very sure. I've left them closed this winter. And I think I can tell the difference between cold air on my right hand and cold air on my left leg...
