Cold air box!! (not the usuall C.A.B.)

I was thinking a buddy of mine has a computer case fan / radiator , its basically a 5"x5"x3" radiator with a 5" fan attactch to it, just like any other rad it has a resivor.

I was thinking of making an almost air tight box out of lexan or something similar, mount the fan/radiator in the box with a hole just big enough for the fan, preferablly in the fender well, then mount the resivor somewhere it can get cooled down.

dunno if this would work but it sure as hell sounds good, whenever you wanna race you could throw a bunch of ice cubs in the resivor, then I'd imagine your intake charge would be below ambient temps

someone correct me if I'm wrong (I know I didn't have to say that cause someone all ways does)

Is the object to cool down the lexan? Or to make an air conditioning system for the intake charge?

the object is to cool the intake charge via the radiator and fan/ they would be mounted inside the box on the fender well so i can suck cool air from wheel well........

Sounds good. Try it out The only thing Id worry about is the extra draw that the fan would have, but I guess if it were such a small fan that the draw would be negligable.

In theory it should work.

But, it would most likely de very difficult to "feel" or even measure the power increase. You would be lowering the intake temp, but unless you set up the intake to draw 100% of it's air through the radiator, you will be mixing the "cold" with the "hot"(ie blowing cold air at the air filter). You mix the cold with the hot and you will only see about 1-2hp (assuming a 10-20 degree temp drop and if you are using a water and ice medium). If you force the intake to draw all of it's air across the mini radiator you will most likely be hurting the performnce of the motor by causing a fairly substancial restriction in the inake track. Now if the radiator were large enough to alow plenty of air through, and your water pump could move the water fast enough, you could probably see 4-5hp (assuming you can achive a 40-50 temperature drop over ambeiant). If that!!!!

Hmm I see your point, you know what would be bad *** is if you could have you TID that was a radiator itself, with water lines running all throughout and big heatsinks, hmmm.....

On the dyno with my n/a 90....we noticed a 10rwhp difference between 120 intake temp, and 60 intake temp. CJ

hmm, im not sure if it was airtight, that the fan would blow adequate air in. But it actually sounds like it could work.

can you explain how you cut the intake charge temp in half??

From open filter in the engine bay, to CA box with air feed from outside, I would think cutting the temps in half would be possible. I once read that, on average, for every 11 degrees Farenheit fropped from the intake temp you get a 1% increase in HP.

Here's just a question that I'm going to throw into the fray.

Now suppose you get this all set up. At higher RPM's these engines suck a lot of air. That means that the air is traveling at a fairly decent rate creating a low pressure cell (unless you set up some sort of ram air). At this point wouldn't the effects of the fan be next to nill? I'm thinking the flow of air past this tiny rad would be sufficient, and the fan might actially resrict air flow.

What do you think?

your statement is totally true redstreak, this is why I'm thinking about mounting my air filter in the brake ducting, have the rad/fan in front of the filter then have an extra opening with a spring that would open if that amount of air would be sucked in, ie WOT, true wouldn't help the top end, but better gas milage, and more hp at lower rpms, if I even cut the intake charge 25% I would still achive a 5hp gain......
