Exclamation Clutch/Transmission issues, suspect pilot bearing

I've searched for my problem but nothing specific to my issue came up, so i'm posting a new thread. Last weekend I was getting ready to leave Kansas City, where i live, to come back to Springfield where i go to college. As i was driving around town i heard a sort of scraping sound when the car was running and in neutral, also when i shifted into reverse it gave a ncie grinding sound (clutched was pushed all the way down, it's been blead properly). I thought nothing of it and left for school. when i got to the first stop to switch highways i noticed something was wrong, the car was in first and the clutch all way in, but the car started to die like when you let the clutch out and not giving it gas, this is when i started getting worried. When I reached the second stoplight 30 minutes later, the car would not go into gear at all from neutral (thought i'd be nice to my car and let it sit at the light in neutral), i had to rev the engine like i was double clutching and rev matching. Later on as i was driving around 80 in 5th, normal for the way i go, i pushed in the clutch and expected it to rev down, boy i was sure surprised. The engine hovered at 3k like nothing had happened. I then gave it some gas and that broke it loose from whatever was going on and it reved down. but along the way it felt like it was catching and i could feel scraping/grinding/preasure through the clutch peddle.

I suspect it is my clutch, pilot bearing, or a combination of the two. Can any of you guys had this problem or can help me out? I love my car so much and i want to get back to driving her around. This forum has helped me out ALOT in the past with questions.

Cheers, Alex

sounds maybe like your clutch mater or slave cylinder are shot... like the clutch isn't disengaging. that might explaing the sticking. open the hood and have someone step on the clutch while you watch your slave cylinder for movement against the clutch actuating arm. (not sure if that's the "proper" title for it.)

the grinding noise is another story. how old is youe clutch? does it need to be replaced? climb under your car and pull off the little plate at the bottom of your bell housing ant take a look. check for excessive or uneven wear. has the clutch been replaced in the past without having the flywheel resurfaced? that would explain uneven wear...

help us help you,
TR

Sounds like the pilot bearing is a good possibility.
Always check the hydraulics first, but when they fail the clutch pedal will go to the floor and stay there.
My symptoms of a bad pilot bearing: Stopped at a red light, put it in nuetral, when I tried to shift in to first, no go. It would not shift in to any gear with the engine running. It would shift fine with the engine off. I had to start the car in gear and then drive home without using the clutch to shift.

Yeah I think these guys are right, after reading all of your post I agree. Hydrolics wouldnt cause noises. Sounds like its completely gone and locking the trans input shaft to the eshaft and causing it to try and pull no matter what situation.

I just took my engine apart a few days ago, I had alot of clutch issues and tons of noise and found my pilot bearing was GONE! I found a few needles left, but the carrier was GONE, no where to be found. Along with the T/O bearing being dry and pretty much on the verge of lockup. So like everyone said, Pilot and seal, t/o bearing and while your at it might as well replace the trans front cover and gasket. If it has any wear on it that is. Can cause premature failure and the t/o bearing to move around on the shaft and not sit correctly on the teeth on the pressure plate

thanks guys for the quick repleys, I reallly apresiate it. I'll be getting a new clutch soon I've had the car for over a year now and i have no idea when or if the clutch has been replaced. the odd thing that i forgot to mention is that when i finaly reached springfield it was shifting again and wasn't stalling at red lights. it was like nothing had ever happened to it. should pilot bearing failures be intermitant? haha.

Maybe it finally rubbed the pilot bearing to powder and freed it up again. Maybe you dont have any ehsaft damage from the failure. I didnt and mine was completely gone
