Clutch/Tranny/Vert Q's
Just curious, as I am asking this for a friend, but what does this sound like?
Clutch or tranny makes noise when clutch pedal is released. If the clutch is pressed, the noise goes away, sounds just like a throwout bearing, only it's working in the opposite mannor. The noise seems to go away in 4th and 5th. Clutch or tranny? Tranny shifts smooth, bushings seem worn, no synchro grind, so I am thinking its a bearing near the front of the tranny...
Second, for yall vert guys this is an '88 and the motors are shot. Voltage is getting to the motors, but the top ain't coming down (yes the releases are free "unlocked")
Where is the manual release? The poor guy doesn't have a factory manual.

Mine does the same thing. I think it's just shot bearings. It's noisy when then clutch is out because the engine is spinning the input shaft. When you push the pedal down the input shaft stops spinning.

that would be the Release bearing (T/O Bearing) chirping/grinding on the fingers of the pressure plate
Not that big of a deal, but, can lead to premature wear on both parts, i would try to fix it... but... i wouldnt sweat it.

The tranny noise is NOT the throwout bearing because when you push on the clutch pedal this is when the throwout bearing pushes on the pressure plate and the tranny stops turning. Therefore it has to be a bearing in the transmission. It is most likely a bearing on the countershaft gear. This is because the noise goes away in 4th meaning the bearings on the mainshaft is probably ok. Drain the oil out of it and see if you get any particles or bearing *****. I know this sounds to obvious but thats what I found once. Also with the convertible top problem I agree with RX7_ragtop make sure the parking brake is on, but also make sure the light comes on in the dash. If it beeps really quickly it means something is wrong and it won't move.

something could be not aligned right causing the T/O to chirp on the fingers... IT HAPPENED TO MY **** ONCE... hell.. still is.. thats y i said maybe the T/O bearing. Ok, do what i did, go where the slave cyl is, and pull the fork tward the slave cyl/front of the car... my chirp went away, meaning that it WAS the T/O bearing on the fingers. Sometimes the spring wears out and doesnt pull the fork all the way back any more. My car was doing the same thing, and it was the T/O bearing resting on the fingers and making a clip clip sound. and isnt the release bearing and T/O the same thing?

also ItsNiceToBurnRice has the same exact problem i had/have, and he siad it was the T/O on his as well.... chirping/grinding with the clutch OUT... and goes away when in. The chirping stops when the clutch is depressed bc there is enough pressure on the bearing and fingers to eliminate the noise. not sure about all this, but, thats what the deal with mine and ItsNiceToBurnRice is.

The throwout bearing and the clutch release bearing is the SAME bearing, just different names. It can't be the pilot bearing because when the clutch pedal is released ie the clutch is engaged the flywheel,clutch,pressure plate and pilot bearing are all turning at the same RPM so the bearing can't be making a noise. I severely doubt it is the throwout (or release, whatever you want to call it) bearing because when the clutch is engaged the bearing barely even touches the pressure plate. I still think it is a bearing in the tranny. Hope I am wrong because a release bearing is much easier to replace, but tranny bearings are not that difficult and are fairly inexpensive. How did the convertible top make out?

funny thing that i have an 89 vert and mine makes the same niose when the clutch is released
even funnier is my hubbys 2000 toyota tacoma makes the same noise
first they say its the throwout bearing then the next minute.. they dont know!! (dealer-of course)
they said they arent even sure what it could be considering he has about 26,000 miles on it?!

Hey, try that little trick i did with mine. The one that i pulled the fork tward the engine/slave cyl direction to see if the t/o stops ridding on the fingers on the pressure plate. Mine is doing that right now and making a loud *** chrip chirp chirp noise so i am going to install a little spring on the top next to the slave to pull it tward the engine to get rid of that ****.
