Clutch question

Im going to be purchasing a 89 GXL here ina few weeks and I have a small question. I dont know too much about clutches nor the rotary itself but im going to go out on a limb with my question and assumptions.

The motor in said car sounds perfect, as in it starts up with little to no smoking and sounds much better than my 88. The motor has no problem reaching redline when it is out of gear, though during both of the test drives the car was slow, much slower than my current 88, as it started out, in the quarter mile i drove it both times it never reached 50 mph, though it was slightly uphill, even though it should have reached at least 70, again mine can get to that in the quarter with traffic in front of me. So my question is, is it bad plugs and wires, the differential, or is it the clutch. The short shift has little play in it but the clutch pedal feels like its not catchign till its nearly let go of(as in i take my foot from it), the ebrake light is on, but the brake is off( I know so because i had to coast it back to the dealership cuz it ran outta gas>.<)

Any help would be most appreciated guys since this car will most likely become the daily driver while my other goes down for repairs(I.E. 5 lug conversion and motor rebuilds)
