Clutch problem and questions.

My clutch is spongy and I can't engage any of the gears while the engine is running. I can engage gears when the engine is off. Does this mean the clutch is out. I really don't have much experience with clutchs, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Check the clutch hydraulics. Mainly the master and slave cylinder for leaks or around the clutch line, etc.

Probably the hydraulics going out on ya...Rebuild or replace the clutch master and slave cylinders...Rebuild kits can usually be found at your auto parts store, and is a fairly straightforward process. Make sure the cylinder bores are nice & clean & lubed with new brake fluid before the new rebuild seals go in...

Thanks for the replies. This may be a stupid questions, but is there a clutch reservoir where I can check the fluid level to see if there's a leak.

yes, if u will find motor in your engine bay, u will see transmission bolted to it. On top of transmission there is clutch slave, from slave goes line to clutch master cylinder and reservoir is on top of the cylinder

Found it, I should have looked at my manual first. But I freaked out and the first thing I could think of was coming to the forum for support. I don't see any signs of leakage on the resevior like I did when I had to replace my brake cylinder, but I will refill resevior and see if I can find where it's leaking. When replacing the clutch master cylinder, do I also need to replace the slave at the same time?

It's a good idea- If you rebuild both cylinders, you're basically overhauling the entire clutch hydraulics system so that you won't have to worry about it for a while. Take a good look at the rubber flex line that attaches to the slave cylinder also- sometimes they get old & start leaking at the ferrules. Both rebuild kits should cost you less than $25, just pay attention to the way all the seals & springs come out, and reinstall the new kits in exact reverse order...
