That really doesnt sound like a clutch problem at all, if im reading you right. It sounds, well... kinda normal. I can take my car in and out of gear with the car off and clutch not depressed, no problem. As for driving down the road if you rev match the gear with the crank it'll pop into gear, and it'll usually pop outta gear if you yank it hard enough.
Usually when clutchs go out the pedal gets real high before it starts to enguage and it may "slip". Thats when the flywheel and the pressure plate move with the motor RPM and the clutch disc stays back behind with the transmission, which causes the motors RPMs to rise and the car doesnt go as fast.
Or some ****.
