Clutch adjustment confusion

I've been having clutch wierdness ever since I installed my ACT HD clutch almost a year ago. On the first day, it gripped so hard I could barely shift. After a good break-in I could launch and squeal the tires. Months later and I started having clutch noise and engagement issues. I thought it was hydraulics so I got a new slave.

Today I realized the clutch height was about an inch off because the nut that holds the switch in please had come loose... so I think bad adjustment might have ruined my ACT clutch. I readjust the height and I find that I can't even launch without making the whole car shake (and not even chirping the tires)...

I'm trying to adjust the clutch play for the bajillionth time, but the FSM has two completely different values: pedal play and total pedal play. WTF? I'm pretty sure you're supposed to look at the big value, and apparently most hydraulic clutches should have around 1/2 an inch of play.

BUT, I had somewhat more than that. So I adjusted it, but I'm wondering whether or not the adjustment rod should have any resistance, or no resistance. I know you're the hydraulics should not have any pre-loading (I think this is what burned out my old clutch), but I can't get the right freeplay without having a little resistance in the rod.

Any ideas?

Heavy duty. But I think I fubared it with bad clutch adjustment after a few thousand miles... although it's still OK for regular driving.
