Clicking clutch pedal

My clutch pedal started clicking recently out of the blue. I am not sure why it happened, but I have located the source of the click. The clutch sensor button under the dash that detects when the pedal is depressed has started sliding past the spot it is supposed to nest in when the clutch is engaged. Anyone have any ideas on why this happened or what to do about it. To start off, no, I did not move the pedal around, and I don't like the idea of getting in there and trying to bend it into position so that it the sensor doesn't slide off the perch anymore - I don't want to break it any more than it already is.

Mine did that on both the clutch and the brake. The little rubber cushion that the switch button touches fell out and the button was going into the whole where the rubber cushion mounted. Fix it or the button will break like it did on me. Enough of those clicks and it will fall out. For a temporary fix, you can just wrap some duck tape around where that little rubber cushion was mounted at just to give the button a little something to touch. I found the cushion and jbwelded it back on

Hmm, yeah, I think I remember seeing something small and rubber rolling around the floorboard recently. I hope it didn't make it under the carpet.

This happened to my GXL. For no apparent reason it started clicking. I took a look, and it was the same problem as you described. Been driving around like this for a while =(. Looks like an easy fix though. Thanks for the info.

It's a common problem, probably... happened to me too.

You can replace it with a properly sized bolt if you're lazy... increases the noise a little bit though.

I also have a bolt as the clutch pedal stopper to shorten the throw distance.

Here's a cool thread with pictures of the part you need along with the Mazda part number. I think it costs around $3 so why not do it right and not worry about the duct tape or other jerry-rigged solution failing again?

When this rubber bumper disappears, you'll also notice your cruise control won't work anymore, and on an S4 car, you lose the upshift light (which may be a good thing).

Hmmm, yeah, it all makes sense now. I had noticed that the upshift light stopped working when the clicking started (1988 S4 vert, by the way). Of course, I don't think that I saw this rolling around on the floorboard. The piece I found was a small cube of black foam/rubber with what might have been double-sided tape on one side.

Maybe the previous owner replaced the OEM part with something he rigged up out of foam and double-sided tape?

I've only ever seen two Canadian FCs up close and both were S5s. I guess maybe the Canadian cars didn't have the upshift light, which was probably added to encourage U.S. drivers to drive in a more economical fashion. All the U.S. S4s I've seen were equipped with an upshift light.
