Cleaning up tail lights

Would it be safe to use the same method of sand papering and clearcoating that I cleaned my FTP's with to clean up my tail lights? First I used a 220 grit, then I used something very fine like 400 grit. After that I clear coated it and it came out looking very very nice. My tail lights are so scratched up they look a greyish/white. I just don't want to try this out myself and mess it up because my car is finally going to be on the road in a week and that would screw me over. Has anyone else clearcoated their tail lights? Thanks.

You mean just the black lens structure, right? I've done it, got rid of the scratches OK, used several coats of gloss black and even more coats of clear coat, doesn't look as good as OEM, of course, but it's OK...

Alright, cool. I didn't really mean painting them. I just meant running some clearcoat over them. I figured that would clear it up a bit. However, if I like what I see in the pictures I might just do that.
