Question Clank noise in 1st gear at take off

I have a new problem starting, and have read other
threads that seem simular. What I have been looking
for though I haven't seen.

I have a noise that sounds like someone taps on the
drive shaft with a hammer when I take off from a stop.
It is more pronounced after leaving reverse and then
shifting into 1st gear. The sound seems to be very close
to the shift stick. If I keep the gears tite while stopping
I don't get any noise.

Q: 1) Is this deffinitley Drive Shaft?
2) If so how long can I get by like this? 1000 miles?

I am currently working on an Idle problem and don't want
to start on a new subject yet. Every month I have a major
repair on this car. It's worse than having a car payment

i've got a similar problem...i'm gonna take mine in to the local rx7 god next week and get a diagnosis. i'm too worried that the "clank" (mine sounds more like a "toonk" though) could be detonation.

i did crawl under there last night and tried to wiggle the driveshaft...didn't really budge, so i dunno if that's it or not.

pm me or shoot me an email next week and i'll let you know what i found out on my car.

If hearing taking off....then its a very good chance it is the drive shaft.

John,

Good luck, I don't have an RX7 God yet. I went to the
dealer and they all ran and hid. The manager came out
and said they can't work on 1st & 2nd generation RX7's.
They claim they dont have any FSM on the late modles.
I know that's a line of @%$%*, and I feel like buying one
and giving it to them.

It certainly sounds like the front U joint they way you describe it. The problem with getting underneath and checking for play is that it may only take the high load of the lower gears to make it snap (clunk) and you may not feel any play early on. I would not drive it much at all. Serious problems if the shaft shears off. However, I do not recall ant threads here where the drive shaft has dropped.

just got a call back from the rx7 guru who took my car around the block...definately the driveshaft. the driveshaft still doesn't wiggle, but the mechanic said at this point, the bearings are prob siezed (lotsa vibration).
