When my car (89 convertible) was stolen, the thieves cut the wires to the cigarette lighter and took it. Cheapskates. Therefore, I now need help with the wiring for the new one. Also need some help with what type of connectors to use for connecting the cigarette lighter.

If you have ever pulled the lighter out (the part that stays in your dash normally), you will see two spade-like posts on the back. Therefore, I presume only two wires run to the lighter. However, there are 4 wires leading to that location:

1 - red w/green stripe
1 - blue w/brown or purple stripe
2 - black wires

Which two do I connect to my lighter. Does the trim ring around the lighter normally light up? (I can't remember). If so, which wires do I run to the light and what kind of light is back there. If there is a light back there, and anyone can even get me part numbers, I would be ecstatic - even the dealer can't answer my question!

Yes the trim ring is illuminated - I think you will find the other two wires are for the bulb that lights up the interior of the ashtray.

 

Normally there is a two pin plug that the wires then plug into the back of the cig lighter, these can be replaced by female blade terminals (local electronics store or radio shack- maybe .05 each) if the factory plug is bad or missing.

I m at work right now, so tonight when I get home I will look up to see which one goes where (you don't want to mix up the two if you ever plug anything like a radar detector in, or it will smoke the detector).

There is also a light, for the trim ring, that plugs into the radio bezel.

black wires are always grounds. since there are 2 maybe one of the lighter and other for light ?

the red w/green stripe to the lighter or light, and the blue w/brown or purple stripe to the other.

Icemark - what do you mean the light connects to the radio bezel? - I see 4 wires back there - I assume that, as someone said above, that one black (ground?) and one colored wire go to each of the light and the cig lighter? Where does the radio bezel come into play? (oh, by the way, the radio was stolen also, so I have an aftermarket head unit now, Sony CDX-M770, if it matters).

Red with green stripe is to the light for the ring around the cigarette lighter, the other wire (blue with black stripe according to my diagram, but close enough) is cigarette lighter power. Each black wire is a ground return for the above (2-wire pairs). Hope this clears it up for you!

Yep, the Radio bezel has a light on it around the cig lighter. A type 194 bulb (3 watt) and socket. Snap in or twist in depending on dash style.

Irv, Keith's dad is correct in that the Blacks.. they are ground (larger black to the outside of the cig lighter) and I have a LtBlue/Black as the 12v+ in hooked up to the center conductor of the cig lighter.

 

Thanks a lot guys! I've been sitting with this hole in my dash for a few weeks now, waiting to take it back in to have someone look at it. Now the wiring part is clear.

It appears that all I have to do now is 1) run to Home Depot/auto store and pick up the correct female spade connectors; and 2) get a 3w bulb and socket from Home Depot/auto store (I assume the sockets are pretty standard, right?); and 3) figure out where to mount the light (no stock radio to work with).
