Chopping the Greddy FMIC
Okay, so I have a greddy FMIC on my car. Not a big fan of the fact that my bumper internals are well, missing. It just won't fit on a S4 with all that stuff in there.
So in the mind of safety, I came up with a crazy idea. Could I take my intercooler into a welding shop, have them remove the upper half of the core, and weld a 1/8" plate on top? My reasons:
a) That upper half is tucked away inside the bumper anyway, and is pretty useless unless major bumper cutting occurs (which won't happen!)
b) I get the bumper reinforcement back.
c) I rather not spend $300 on a new core.
d) all the intake charge is forced to go through the part of the intercooler that is actually in the air stream.
e) I'm not running a wild turbo with high boost so I'm positive it will be able to handle my boosting.
f) I haven't f$%#ed with my car in awhile......
So, am I a retard or should I go for it?

well you wasted all that money on a product that you HAVE to cut in half.......it's not very smart to me......why don't you go to the same welding shop and have them build you a sort of "cage" to replace the bar.......or sell the greddy kit and make a custom FMIC that will meet your needs......an expensive FMIC is overkill on a stock turbo IMO.
i say:
1. make some sort of cage around the IC that would replace the safety bar and if you can extend it into the engine bay to protect the motor in case of impact...this is just a thought and I have not thought it through so don't be all pissy at me....
AND
2. cut your bumper so you at least use the IC efficiently
OR
3. sell the IC kit and make a custom kit......
OR
4. say "**** it" and leave it as is and do not HIT ANYONE!

I R SAD PANDA W/O BAW
Check out my thread on the greddy fmic install still retaining almost all of the bumper reinforcement.

If anything why not just get a custom core with the same width and length but with a shorter height and sell your greddy core. You'll probably end up with extra money that way.

Yeah, but I had a good deal on it, and wanted to keep the stock NA hood, so I needed a FMIC of sometype. Got it thinking that I was also planning for future mods, but I may just stay where I am for now.
