Chirping sound?

I have an odd chirping sound that shows up whenever I accelerate or decelerate and sometimes (not always) at constant speed. At low speed it seems to be consistant with the speed of the drive shaft, but at high speeds it becomes extremely inconsistant.

The sound seems to be eminating from the drive shaft area, or the rear end of the transmission. (90 GXL stickshift) There doesn't seem to be an adverse effect on the acelleration or decelleration, it's just a loud chirping, or clicking noise like if somebody had a metal pen on the end of a string and was dangling it against the drive shaft.

I'm at a loss as to what it is, we thought it might be the heat shield, but it has clearance around the drive shaft and we checked it for rattling. If anyone has an idea as to what might be causing it, please let me know.

bad wheel bearings make chirping sounds. jack the car up and see if you can wiggle the wheel back and forth.

That wouldn't come from directly under the center of the console, would it?

I checked the bearings, the front passenger side has a very little bit of play, all of the other wheels are fine. Both front wheel bearings are new though, and all I need to do is tighten that one up just a little.

I replaced them a couple of weeks ago. I had to tighten up the other side just a little, and it has no play now, and this should be the same. It's not making any noise, so I don't think it would be causing it.
