Chirping noise from shifter..help????
I have an 87 n/a. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a chirping noise coming from the trans. Thinking it was the throw out bearing, I replaced the whole clutch yesterday. After getting everything out back together, and driving down the road I noticed the sound was not gone. I noticed though that this chirping noise is coming from below the shifter, rather than the front of the trans. It mainly only makes the sounds while down shifting in 1st and 2nd gear. It sounds like a worn bearing or something chirping under the high load. I'm just hoping someone may have some input that could help!
Thanks,
Evan

Sounds like syncro noise to me. High load and down shifting without double clutching puts the most stress on them. It's definitely the syncros if you hear it as you put pressure on the shifter but before the trans actually makes it into gear.

This a really really good video I wanted to share with everyone, including OP. The little brass ring in the video is what does a **** load of work in our rx7's.

You know I do get some gears grinding going up to 2nd or 3rd gear sometimes. 3rd more often than 2nd. So I think it's safe to say that's a bad synchro, but how could the chirping noise be a synchro? Thanks for the help, and the video was pretty helpful as well!
