are you talking about replacing the whole thing from the motor on back, or a simple catback, or what?

Well man, I know here in Canada I can get a full mainifold-back exhaust crafted for less than $500CAN; less if I supply the muffler (which i will). But keep shopping around, even some normal mechanic shop can do it for cheap, but like I said, look around.

check ebay for MOTORIA or SS AUTOCHROME 3" exhaust. Best bang for the buck but it's loud.

it is. It was stupid lound on the TII so you know the NA will be ear-bleeding loud but it's cheap.

I think Corksport uses the same people as SSAutochrome/Motoria.

This is not what the thread is about, and you don't know this guy nor his circumstances, favorable or not.

To answer the OP, go to a couple shops and talk with someone there about cost versus what you want to see done. Another option might be to have a bored neighbor with a welder do it cheap. As for sound quality though, I think if you make sure to use thicker than 1/8" walled pipe it shouldn't sound too bad.

i no im young and got married but oh well..i love her and want to be with her..any way if i go to an exhaust shop and have them do it with a straight pipe is there goin to be enough pressure to open the 5/6th ports with out rigging up an air pump or whatever cuz i dont wanna do thats and dont no how and dont trust me self to do it....easiest thing for me is just to have an exhaust shop do it..i have an axle back on the car already...i just want to get the cats out of there to free up a little more hp..or is it not even worth doin sense i dont have a header?

If you don't have much money you're either going to have to get used to either working on the car yourself or leaving it as it is. Or selling it, or going into debt for modifications... The point is, when working on cars cheap, the cheapest way is almost always to do it yourself somehow.

just like in the last thread you posted a few suggested save up just a bit more and buy a proper racing beat exhaust. years ago when i talked to an exhaust shop about a custom setup they priced me for more than if i just bought the RB cat back system. my suggestion is get the RB cat back, and then have somebody weld you a custom I pipe to go where the cat is. then when you have more money in the future maybe buy the header to finish it all off. in the long run im sure you will appreciate saving just a bit more and buying a proper perfect fit exhaust. good luck with whatever you do

piece by piece. Catback, then midpipe and finally header.

+1 ^
My N/A had a cat back for a while then added a mid pipe and left it at that. I never put a header on it cause I heard it would be too loud. It ran great even keeping the stock manifold.

Thread cleaned. Please keep it on topic. The guy asked for exhaust advice, not life advice.

I'd go for cheapest in long run not cheapest now. That means first of all screw the exhaust and just make sure the car is all fixed up so you won't have a money pit in repairs or more gas consumption later. But, assuming that's done, I see 2 options:

1. Stick in a Bonez cat, rig up method of opening ports. With the Bonez cat you won't have to worry about cheating smog later ($$$, time). If smog isn't an issue then have a shop make you a custom cat replacement pipe instead, or buy one somewhere (whichever option is cheapest). To operate the ports you need a tee, a valve and some tube from the local hardware store. You tee off the air pump outlet, then through the valve, then into the port actuators. See the test at www.aaroncake.net to see if your ports are working. Keep adjusting the valve until they open at 4000rpm. It involves piping so maybe the exhaust shop or similar place could do it for you. I can't think of a simpler way than that. So if you can't do that see #2.

2. Get the RB mufflers anyway. Otherwise the noise - while technically not loud enough to be illegal - will be trouble with cops. You can't afford that. Leave in the stock catalytic converters and your ports will still open. If cops in your area don't hassle guys with loud exhausts, then the answer is that most cheap exhausts still add power. They're just big and loud. Just don't get a glasspack/cherry-bomb/other-fiberglass-filled mufflers. Those will melt.

Option 1 gives about 15 HP. Option 2 gives about 7-8 HP. After that you just stop and wait until you have more cash saved. Don't bother with other things for power, not even an intake. They aren't worth the money, trouble and potential problems on a tight budget. Don't change the pipe size; 2" pipe is only worth a tiny bit less power than 2.25". Not worth the money on a tight budget.

Btw, if you ever need to fix leaky, noisy exhaust welds from a cheap job, try this: Wrap in fiberglass insulation. Wrap that with aluminum flashing. Wrap that with 2-3 hose clamps, being careful not to crimp the flashing. Check later and further tighten hose clamps if necessary. Costs hardly anything and works like a charm.

Concensus here is 2.25" for NA. Do a quick search if you want to verify this but nothing larger is recommended.

and then get someone to bend and weld some pipes to get rid of the precats. Or get a pipe to replace the precats, then gut a cat, then bolt it to the catback you have.

Or you could gut the precats and the main cat.
