Changed Tranny fluid, now grinds gears

Heres the story, yesterday i changed my tranny fluid. It came out smelling like **** and very runny, about like oil (20W) and very dark. I put in GL-4 85/90W, its orgainic, it went in just like honey, same color and texture. I filled it up till it trickled out of the fill hole and closed it up. ever sence then its been imposible to get into 2nd while driving and pretty much all gears give a little crunch going into gear. My gears never used to grind before it changed the fluid. anything i should do or change?

thanks guys

Based on your description, The previous owner might have put motor oil in it to mask the worn out syncros.
You said it smelled stinky, so there may have been a blend of sulfated gear oil with motor oil.

Dark color in motor oil is from fuel residue.
Dark color in gear oil is worn metal residue.

How many miles on this puppy?

sounds about right, you should try synchomesh. Its a type of tranny fluid that you can get at any GM dealership, and they just recently started selling it at Autozone where i live, but it will make your synchros quiet and will stop the grinding.

They will tell you its only made for certain GM models, because of the way their synchros are, but it will work fine. I know a lot of integra people use it and it works just fine......

it only has 108k on it. it wasn't as dark as motor oil usualy is. it was a dark grey. I just want it to be able to shift again. the drain plug had a little bit of metal filings on it, didn't seem like a whole lot. what it seems like is that the gears keep spinning when i push in the clutch and i have to use the syncros to slow it down, but it always ends in a crunch. it shifts better when the motor is warmed up. any ideas?

and the weight oil you used is slightly too thick, i wouldn't have put anything thicker than 75W90 in.

Redline MT-90 does it for me, and I've got 152k on my tranny. It doesn't grind.

Or try Syncromesh. Just change what you have in there... the weight is wrong anyway. The FSM recommends 75w90 I think

When you push the clutch, the gears should spin down in 3 to 5 seconds.

If not, the clutch or pilot bearing may have a problem.

Ditto that syncromesh. Get it at autozone, it's made by pennzoil. Quieted my 3rd gear
when redline would not.
