Cat gutting, 6 ports
Hey I just got a couple of questions about these two very popular mods everyone is always talking about.
About the 6 ports thing...don't the ports open up at a certain rpm? If they do, how is there so much more power created from having them open all the time (wiring them open)? When your engine is at 7000rpm, does it know the difference if the ports have been open since 5000rpm or 1000rpm? It makes the engine breathe easier, but how does it make a difference in the top end when they are open un-modded. Or do you open them wider or something?
And about the cat. If I have a totally stock exhuast, is gutting my cat worth it? Will I get anything out of it? What about gettin a downpipe for the pre-cat? Just seems I might be wasting my time if I don't have an upgraded exhuast.
Thanks,

If you have a 1986-88, then the ports are RPM, using exhaust backpressure, activated. If you have a 1989-91, then they are opend by using the airpump.
The cat: I just gutted mine, but I am putting a race pipe on it instead. I recomend doing the same. The cat causes turbulence, actuallly hurting top end power. Spend the $90, or get one made at the local muffler shop.

When the ports are open, more air can flow into the manifold. They stay closed stock because they produce backpressure, which is needed for bottom end torque. If you do these mods, be prepared to loose torque, but you will gain a noticeable increase in top end power.
