My S5 TurboII is going to need a new driveshaft eventually (142k and counting). I would like to get a carbon fiber one (yet still strong) so that if it breaks on the dragstrip, it'll just turn into a big bloomin' onion instead of poking a hole in my car (or me).

Anyone know if they sell them for TurboII's?

why not just put a catch line under the driveshaft like domestic guys do?

 

Those things are stupid. Most Ive seen go about 5 inchs from the front joint on the shaft. What happens when it breaks behind it? And domestic guys do it because thats what the NHRA rule book says. Its a stupid rule. The entire drive shaft should be covered.

 

They can be custom made for any car if you send the manufacturer your driveshaft!

 

Theres a place in North Ga or tennessee that does it. I believe the price was around $350 for everything last tiem I checked. PM David88vert about it. Hes the one who originally told me about them.

Go to Supraforums and do a search for CarbonfiberFX...or CFX. They make them for the supra...I'm sure that they could for an FC. I'll PM them and see what they say.

 

That's because the weak point is usually not the driveshaft itself, it's the U joint.

 

Driveshaft loops are there to protect against the most dangerous situation, which is a front uni joint failure. It's much more likely that either the uni or the welded end will fail as this is the weakest point in the shaft. Failure in the actual shaft itself is very unlikely unless there's a manufacturing flaw, which your 145,000 mile shaft obviously doesn't have.
A driveshaft loop at the front of the shaft (and the rear if you're paranoid) will be all you need.
If you really think you need a carbon fibre driveshaft, be prepared to pay huge dollars for a custom one.

 

I've got a regular summit racing brand that I've got to install one of these days. It's actually a regulation if you're faster than 12.99 on street tires or 13.99 on slicks (I think). They make you put them up front so that if the u joint breaks, your car doesn't pole-vault. Think about it, if the rear breaks it'll smack the body and the ground, but the car should remain on the ground.
