Carbon Fiber

I was looking to make myself some carbon fiber products for my FC and I found a roll of carbon fiber for sale on ebay and was wondering whether it was a good deal or not. I know some of you like Mazdaspeed7 know more about this than I do so I'd like your input. BTW....here's the link to the specific item.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebays/ws/eBayISA...tem=1840196150

thanks in advance.

Try to copy and paste this into the URL:

That should work.

If you found a roll of carbon fiber then it's not going to do you much good unless you have the resin and the ability to make it look good and finish it off. Sounds like what you found is just the actual material itself. Kind of worthless in that form for most people. It's hard to make that stuff look good and shine well. A lot of work involved.

Sure, but you might as well use fiberglass then instead. It is much cheaper

Then why do people insist on having black carbon fiber hoods that do not match their car at all? Unless it costs more than the hood is worth to paint....

Carbon is a bit lighter / stronger than fiberglass. Other than that, they can say 'i've got a CARBON hood

CF has a very unique appearance when cured/finished correctly. Thats why they/I dont/didnt paint it. And YES I like to show off that my FC has a CF hood. If you had the only 2nd gen with a CF hood in New England, and maybe the US I bet youd show it off! And what cant be painted?

So is this CF a good deal? And as for a CF hood....how many layers would you need if you were to make one?

I think boostmotorsport will agree with me here. Youre not going to just buy yhe stuff, and have it turn out perfect the first time. It is far from easy, especially to make it perfect. Whart kind of resin did you get? I hope its not polyester, it doesnt stick to cf very well.

If you have never worked with fiberglass before, I would not recommend this. It can be expensive to learn, because you will mess up on the first few things you try to do. I picked it up really quickly, but I dont even want to think about how much I spent learning it, from all the pieces I messed up and had to throw away.

Oh, I've had some experience making things with composite material such as fiberglass and kevlar but haven't done many things with carbon fiber. I've made some panels and naquaducts for my school's solar car but don't really know about the pricing for such material so I was just wondering if it was a good deal so that I didn't get gipped or nething. By the way, I'm using epoxy resin.

The roll was taken home from work by my dad because it was simply unneeded at his workplace. There are no blemishes on this continuous sheet.

Usually carbon fiber needs to be layed up onto a piece with resin. Please email me if you need instructions. I don't care what you do with after you purchase the roll, but here are some ideas:

- make your own custom dashboard. but it's real unlike your friends' fake CF on their dash.

- make a carbon fiber hood

- build lighter, stronger parts for your miniature airplane

- lay up parts for your car, broken sideskirts, mirrors, etc.

- lay it over your panels to give them the carbon fiber look. but it's real unlike your friends'

- cut the pieces into smaller ones to resell on ebay

- make panels for your car and other cars

- wear it and pretend like it makes you look cool

My favorite is the last one

I have about 1500$ into failure CF hoods! Also that role isnt wide enough to do a FC hood, youll need a seam somewhere.
