my thought exactly rotarymiata
carbon deposits will cause hot spots and lead to preignition or detonation wont it? not smoke on start up. i believe the smoke on start up is do some oil staying or leaking in the combustion chamber after shut down or is it fuel.
i wish i could see thru my engine so i can tell how much carbon is there.

The smoke could be from any one of a number of things, depending on what color the smoke is, or if it's even smoke at all.
Black smoke is oil ring or coner seal wear.
White, sweet smelling smoke can be a coolant leak.
Steam is the cat warming up to full operating temp.
So which is it?
