car won't start-need help

well, heres my story, my car's battery died. then i tried to jump it and it cranked but wouldn't turn over. Next, my friend tried to start it, cranking the car for like about 10 seconds or a little more and adding gas as well. i was standing outside near the opened hood, and i could smell a kinda burning smell, not like gas or anything though. the next day, i tried charging the battery and cranked it. the belts and everything spun but the car would not turn over. it just spun. that night, i tried to unflood it and the plugs were fouled pretty bad, and even wet w/ fuel. afterwards i plugged it back in, and tried to start it. it sounded alot more like it wanted to start but it just wouldn't start. my question is can it be that the flooded plugs were messed up enough that i need new ones to get it started, because they haven't been changed in a while. also, i dont' think anything major is wrong like a blown motor or a bad seal because the car drove fine, up until the battery died, so it couldn't have gone bad overnight. im guessing that either my friend had his hand on the ignition too long and burned out something or the car is still flooded. can someone please help me. i would greatly appreciate it. i tried doing a search but couldn't find anyone with a similar problem.

The smell is probably the starter, maybe he didn't burn it up yet. Meanwhile, try the unflooding method and don't lay on the starter longer than 10 seconds at a time, let it rest 20-30 seconds before trying again: >http://rx7.com/tech/unflood-fc.html

Yeah, most likely flooded and the smell is probably the starter. If your battery died, you might also want to get your alternateur bench tested in case it went bad.

yea, but if the starter or alternator is bad or any of the ignition components, would you even hear the belts and stuff spin or the engine even crank?

damn, i'm so damn happy. after 3 weeks of just sitting there, my car finally started. the problem was it did flood. i followed the unflooding procedures exactly, and then finally it turned over. it bursted out a shitload of smoke but i let in the smell. thank you for the advice. if not for you guys, there would have been another junk car at the local pick and pull.
