Car is too rich... and not in a good way

soo I took my car to a shop to get it looked at cause the thing is running kinda shitty. The mechanic is still lookin at it, but he can't figure whats causing it to run the way it does. All he could tell me was that it was running too rich. I was kinda thinking that it was the O2 sensor that was messed up. Could there be anything else that would possibly cause it to run that way.

Any input would be helpful

Thanks

Clogged fuel return line (not likely) causing higher than normal fuel pressure.

Coolant sensor broken, reporting cold to the ECU, leading to a "dump fuel to keep it running" mode.

Dirty injectors not fully closing.

Any variety of things. Check 'em out.

And, if you're interested, I'm in Ames with an 88 SE & a parts car. Come visit sometime.

Hey Russ thanks for the input. I'll have to check that out. Hopefully the mechanic can find out something else about it, and hopefully it won't cost me a limb to get it fixed. I might have to do that sometime. I'll keep you in mind if i ever am in need of some parts, since your much closer than a lot of other people. Heh

I'd suggest getting the injectors cleaned to begin with it shouldn't be too expensive. I know here for a set of 4 it's around $100 CND and that's with cleaned balanced and flow tested. Even if that wasn't the case it sure wouldn't hurt and probably needs it anyways!

Might even be the AFM indicating there's more air coming in that there actually is, either something wrong with it mechanically i.e. spring is lose? or just resistance.

check your TPS as well my car was running like crap and wouldn't hold a steady idle.

You can find all this in the FSM "Factory Servive Manual"
just do a quick search for that on the forum

Hope you get it fixed
