Car smokes, then cuts out!Help!
allright. here the thing: last year around december i get an 87 N/A for free in a non running condition. i towed it over to a friends house and kept it there until we started working on it in the begening of april. we replaced spark plug wires, the plugs, all fluid, and then replaced the fuel pump. we tried turning it on but all it did was blow some fuel line which sprayed gas every where like a bitch. after getting new lines, we replaced the fuel filter and tried running it again. like a miracle, the car turned on and it was running....for about 10 seconds. since the last time it was running was back in 2003, we thought it needed to clean itself out or something so we tried again. again, the car sterted but loads of smoke poured out both exhausts and it cut out. this happened for about ten minutes. car on, car smoke, car cut out. my friends dad says that it might not be getting enough compression, so we dont know what to do. if ou can help me out in anyway, i would appriciate it. sorry the thread is so long.

I've got the same problem. Mine is an 86 N/A that I bought for $200, it had been sitting for 2 or 3 years. It will start using the unflooding procedures but will run for about 1-3 mins before it dies. I'm taking the fuel injectors in the be cleaned and see if that solves my problem as there is fuel leaking into the oil and Im guessing the injectors are clogged and leaking fuel, therefore making it flood everytime i try to start it. If this doesnt work then Im stuck for ideas

I got an 86 running that had been sitting for 7 yrs or so. I did get it running and it kept quitting. I replaced the fuel filter and this helped.....for a while. I pulled the gas tank and found it extremaly rusted. After replacing the tank and a new fuel filter it has run fine most of the time.
There was a tremendous amount of smoke on the initial startup. I just ran the rpms up and waited for the smoke to clear. I saw on a previous post this is normal.
Good luck.
