car in the shop
Well I took my car in for the problem with the check engine light coming on when I let off the gas. I thought it was the TPS but now my mechanic says that he changed the TPS when he put in the new engine, or shortley thereafter and he thinks it may be the ECU? I don't know if that is what he is talking about becuause he just says computer unit and he was going under the driver dash tomorrow to take a look at it. What the hell? the ECU is a damn expensive piece of the car.... what do you guys think? He says it's either that or the wiring going to it. I'll hope for the wiring. He is a good mechanic too, knows what he's doing with Rx7's and also doens't charge an arm and a leg for ****, like last time it was there he did and oil change for like $5.00 and our total bill was only $80.00. It's a 90 GTU for those of you who dont know.

What error codes are you getting.
I was getting random hesitations and check engine lights - turned out the OEM air intake piping was loose or cracked. After taping over the cracks, no more problems.
My error codes were coolant temp and o2 sensor - neither sensor was bad though - just reading the wrong o2 levels.
If your mechanic doesn't have the rx-7 troubleshooting books from Mazda, find one who does. They lay it out in black and white how to fix this type of stuff.

we got an error code for the TPS, full throttle position, that's why we thought it was that. I don't know how he works, he knows a LOT about rx7's I know that... i am just worried about my car. I miss it so much. I wouldn't have worried too much if the engine light didn't come on one time one day and then by four days later it was constantly on, that showed me that something might be wrong. It was by no way random.

He is going under the drivers dash? I hope he isn't looking for the ECU there, it is under the floor on the passenger side of the car. Food for thought .........

Be very suspicious of any shop that wants to swap out the ECU - yes, it's very expensive to swap out, and shop make a LOT of money on it.
Also, be aware that the shop manual mentions to swap out the ECU as a last resort if nothing else works.  You might want to be a guarantee that you don't need to pay for the new ECU swap if it DOESN'T FIX YOUR PROBLEM!
If you're getting error codes, I highly doubt it's the ECU...

Thanks for looking out for me, he's pretty honest he called me back and said he got my car mixed up with another one and that my TPS had not been changed and was bad. Also i wasn't sure if he said drivers dash, I'm a chick and although I feel I know a good bit about my car, I still have a lot to learn. Anyway, He had a used TPS he said he could put in it and I said that was fine, although not really a big fan of used parts. I got the car back and it's not backfiring anymore, and the engine light isn't on anymore, but ... now it's revving it's self with the A/C on. My 87 Rx used to do this, but never this one. It's about a 500 rmp rev too, just up and down, now what? Take it back? Order a new TPS from the dealer? This one has a 90 day warranty, or should i give it time, i don't see the problem fixing itself though....

It sounds like the car doesn't realize it's at idle. This usually means that the TPS isn't adjusted correctly. Of course, it can be bad also. I would take the car back to your mechanic - if the TPS can't be adjusted, he would then have to replace it, at no cost to you. Good luck!
