Car revs to 3000rpm when started

When ever I start the car up in the morning or when it is cold it will start and go right to 3000rpms and wont go down til I hit the gas. And some other times it will start and then die, is there a sensor going bad or something needs cleaned. Thanks Emory

The fast Idle is normal, designed to get the car up to running temp faster in cold weather.. it will go down, but it takes a minute or so... Some guys disable it, but I always left it alone on my previous cars cause it does help here in PA!!!!

AS to why it dies sometimes.. does it do that when the temp is warm or after you have the car started...

However, since i went haltech, I ripped that stuff out a LONG time ago, so, Hopefully, someone else will chime in with how to fix the dying problem.

I know its controlled by a solenoid hooked to the temp sensor..

try cleaning the bac, it acts like the idle air control for piston engines.

hope that helps

forgot to mention is and i am not sure if it is the same on the rx but on piston engine the idle air control opens and closes with throttle and if it sticks open or closed can cause weird idle problems.

When the car revs to 3000 you need to leave it alone unless you have to go immediately. For our cars it's better for them to warm up. Though i'm sure the dying is annoying, it's probably nothing to really worry about.

You guys are incorrect. Its only purpose is to get the pre-cat up to temp in that first 15 seconds to get it working, not to warm up the engine.

IMO the Accelerated Warm-up System was a last-ditch effort by Mazda to meet emissions regulations pertaining to start-up from cold. There is no way you can convince me revving stone-cold engine to 3000rpm is actually good for its long-term health. Most internal engine wear takes place in the first few minutes after starting, because the engine is cold and the oil is not lubricating as well as it does when warm. That's why it's important to heat the engine up as quickly as possible, but that's not that the AWS is for.

If my car had this system (J-specs don’t) it'd be the first thing I ripped off. Removing the AWS solenoid doesn't disable the system entirely, as the BAC valve goes fully open as well, but it drops the cold-start idle speed down to 1500-2000rpm.

Like everyone says its normal. If you dont like it to stay that high and you dont want to disable it, then press the clutch and put your car in 1st or reverse. This keeps the revs. down for me. I sometimes have to do it since it might flood the engine.
