car not going into reverse after i attempted to change into non-existent 6th?
car not going into reverse after i attempted to change into non-existent 6th?
Because the FC has the reverse stick position in the same position as 6th in most cars, I made the mistake of attempting to switch into reverse while driving on the highway. Could this be the cause of it no longer changing into reverse? What would the fix be?

Geez....... can you go into reverse with the car off? If so, put it in reverse and start it with the clutch in. Once its running, slowly release the clutch. Does it move or do you hear rocks in a blender?
i can't put it into reverse with the car off. it's an S5 btw which apparently has a synchro on the reverse gear (not that i know what that means) unlike an S4
What it means is your synchro ring probably exploded. without a synchro ring its gonna be brutally hard to get into reverse, even with the car shut off.
Basically, put a trans in it. Theyre still cheap enough that it would probably be more expensive to put a synchro in it, and with those chunks of syncho flying around in your trans, im sure other stuff got damaged too.

Nothing in that thread suggested that the owner attempted to shift into reverse on the highway several times.
By all means, check your shifter bushings. Should have an answer in about 20 minutes. You'll want to install them on your new trans anyways...
If by some wild miracle you managed to have your bushing fall apart immediatly after ripping it into reverse at 70 per, Id still drain your fluid. Several major grinding events would leave a lot of debris in the tranny.

Alright guys, there is a useful piece of information that has been left out.
OP, did you shift into reverse while traveling down the highway then lift off the clutch so it would engage into reverse…? Any noise occur when this happened?
Or did you hold the clutch in, move the gear lever to reverse, notice your mistake, then shift to the proper 1-5 gear, then lift off the clutch?
He may be right it’s just a bushing issue. Or totally destroyed the synchro/reverse gear, but it depends on the exact details.
I’d assume if there is gear/synchro damage, you’d see excessive metal in the transmission fluid while draining it.

I wouldnt think you could even get it into reverse with the clutch in, because the output shaft is still spinning. And if he let the clutch out I think he would have known 100% he blew his trans because there would probably be trans fluid and shrapnel all over the ground.

it wasn't allowing me to actually shift it into reverse when travelling on the highway. it just made a grinding noise while disallowing me to fully move it into the reverse position, so no, i never disengaged the clutch while attempting to shift.
At this point the next best diagnosis is to drain the fluid as Lespaul suggested above.
Since the bushings are fine the likely answer is that reverse or its synchro are destroyed, and draining the fluid will give you a fairly clear indication. Don't forget to crack the fill plug loose first so you can get fluid back in there after draining.
