Car not drivable -can"3800" be that bad?

Okay, but one last question. Everything I have read about this 3800 stumble seems to suggest it is a performance limiting problem. Can it get bad enough on one cross-town commute to make the car helpless? Right now I would have to drop the car from a plane to see it pass 40mph. This did not occur gradually.
I have downloaded a printer tray full of grounding and secondary injector info -which I appreciate, but I did not see anything which made me think it would completely cripple the car.

Clogged cats? Clogged fuel filter? Is the car in limp mode?

If your talking about the car dying after 3800 rpm's BE CAREFULL!!! There is a ceramic resistor pack in the front right side engine compartment the controlls the secondary injectors! Your secondary injectors kick in at 3800 rpm's, and if this resistor is defective that means your not recieving sufficient fuel after 3800. Thus causing the engine to run EXTREMELY lean. At this point it would be very easy to "pop" your engine. I had to replace this ceramic resistor in my car. If this is not what your talking about, then disregard! Hope it helps none the less!

At 120K my 88 couldn't climb a hill or get past 3800 - 4000. Changed the clogged cats and it was good as new.

Sorry about the double post thing - I'm a chimp! This is my first time messing with this forum stuff - it's a wonder I figured it out at all. i'll have the guy check the converter in the morning - could it impair the car so completely during one trip across town?

His profile says he has a 97 RX-7. How neat. Pictures, please.

Cool info in one of the above posts about the ceramic resistor pack.

Free download for the 97 factory service manual at : http://www.iluvmyrx7.com

By the time I replaced the two pre-cats, my car was absolutly undriveable. You can always take the car to a muffler shop. They can tell by the color of the converter what condition it is in. And if that is not obvious enough, they can drop them and look inside.
