Car and Driver snip about the vert!

In the front of the most recent car and driver mag, they have that page that shows the history of the mag. Well in the "15 years ago" it mentions the vert and says something about how well rounded of a package it is. I would love to see the original article if anyone has it. Just thought any vert owners would be interested.

And I do believe this is very partial to the second gen!

I have a copy of the article. PM me your fax number, or I can scan it and post it in the next day or so.

They also have a blurb about the "last" RX-7, the Spirit R on page 48.

great post icemark!! the explantion of the audio is perfect..and for the many vert owners.. there is a way to bring the old into the new. i put an expensive set of replacement speakers into the factory holes while still connected to the factory(outdated) system. the 300 bucks that are invested make an option to NOT have to add a subwoofer to acheive fullrange sound/beauty and sit back and really enjoy the elements, while adding your own atmosphere via...a great sounding musical experience. my jl audio xr 653 component set brings the old verts ideals of musical beauty..and being surrounded by the "sea of beauty" the article refers to..into the new age of technology and allows the crappy old pioneer system to acheive new standards.and complement the systems original goals 110% by bringing a more, full, lower end sound throughout the musical spectrum!! the best investment to my vert(other than replacing the old worn out seat covers) the atmosphere in my car now is way better than i could have ever dreamed..plus i can always add to the power of the speakers, and the quality, by adding a new headunit directly to the existing system i already added!! not to mention the possibilities of new technology/mp3 players, etc!! and for the extremist theres always room to add amps and subs to the existing setup.

the vert at 12 or so years old..is and can..still be a head turner..and its a few grand cheaper than the hondas vert or the midship runabout known as the new mr2 spyder. what an innovation!! plus its rotory so that makes it priceless. for those who own coupes with a sunroof...ive had mine.. and when i owned my coupes...i always wanted the vert..it may not be turbo, but you are definately happy with dropping the top..instead of dropping the clutch!! but you dont know until you sit in the drivers seat!!

ps ive never been in a turbo rx7 so i could be wrong the experience is probly just as nice!! if you open the sunroof!! lol

Yeah, My scanner is dieing, so when its cold it makes better scans then warm...

Time to spend more money on the computer...

Its funny I have no problems spending $100 on replacement plastic for my 'vert, but the idea of spending $100 on another scanner is met with apprehension.

To top that off the board only accepts 100K pics (which in reality I have not been able to get the severs to accept anything better than 80K... so resolution goes down

Anyway I'll redo some better scans tonight, and email them to anyone that wants them as well as repost here.

I'll take any form of it you are offering. I think I read the whole thing now, minus a few of the really blurry words. Looks like C&D really liked the car othher than its crappy gearing. Thanks alot Mark!

I have a white 91 vert, and I absolutely love it. That article (however well written it is) just does not do it justice! It is by far the most fun 7 to just go cruise around town in.

Today as I got into my car after fueling up [16.7 gal $27.00] this old Hawaiian guy with red hair [ehu] driving a beatter 82 Chev PU with bondo, primer, dent, driver door said, "Is that a 91?" He then asked a loaded question, "How is the air flow with the top down?". He knew the answer.
His brother had a RX7 with "a bolt on kit" from New York and two webbers which spanked Panteras here in Honolulu.

You know the Pantera Club members are old, their Club sells ties.
Love my white 89 and 91 verts! but cant drive them at the same time.
Great article Icemark, thanks.

The vert is my favorite daily driver.

What they don't mention is the soft clutch REALLY adds to the driving pleasure. And the car really dose caress you when driving. Because the vert is a bit heavier and has the stiff suspension, it feels "PLANTED" and SOOOO good on the road. The car feels VERY torquee ... and the throttle responce is SOOO good.

I really need to drive a GTU-S though to have a good comparison of the NA vert vs a lightweight NA track car.

The turbo (on the other hand) has serious power in all gears .. but I miss the throttle responce of the NA motor. The TII's pedal is VERY stiff and seems to have the "on" or "off" feel.

I'm on a mission to restore a bit of streetability to the my TII. Right now I have an ultra stiff clutch & coilovers/racing springs. Fun on the track but sucks all the "enjoyment" on the street.

If I do the TII conversion on the convertible, I'm going to really need to figure out how NOT to spoil the ride. Nothing worse than a 5000HP car with sucky hanlding & ride.
