car dies and then wont turn on!

i was driving m 88 tII, and notice that the interior gauge lights where dimming, then they just turned off, the steering got real hard and the rpms dropped a lot. the car gets what felt like fuel cut at real low rpm and then shuts off. the car would not turn on, you couldnt even hear the starter clicking away. but i got a hold of a battery charger thats portable, and hooked it up and it turned on. but as soon as i took the battery charger off it died. so i just kept the battery charger on the car and drove it home real slow.

my question is if this sounds like a starter problem even though it cranked over real easy once the battery charger was hooked up?

or does it sound like an alternator problem? because i did notice that all the lights worked even if it was real dim.

i have a pretty good feeling its your alternator thats out. but you can also test your battery too to see if its still holding charge. same thing happen to me on my brother's 86.. exactly the same like yours man. but good luck.
