car died on the freeway

had to get my 7 towed home on saturday, i found that the battery was dead, but i just put it in like 3 weeks ago, so i figured my alternator died, after taking the alternator out i found that who ever had the car before me put an old peice of **** rusted 60 amp alt from a 1st gen. well it was no problem exchanging my battery and getting a new 80 amp alt. so i put it all together yesterday and started it up and at first it ran, then it idled low and then the car died. then after trying to start it again the engine shakes very unusualy and will not start. i tried pulling the egi fuse and cranking cuz i figured it might have been sevierly flooded but nothing after like 5 times, just a bit of white smoke out of the exhaust. any one have any advice?
